Adventure and emotion on the most beautiful roads in the world
A tour for nature fans and those who aren’t yet, but are guaranteed to be after this tour!
On the journey from Vancouver to Calgary, don’t forget your camera. We drive through one of the most beautiful areas in Canada: huge forests, crystal-clear lakes and glaciers. The chances of encountering a bear, moose or wapiti on the lonely roads are high. Despite the abundance of nature, there is still enough time to visit the two major cities of Vancouver and Calgary. Some of the highlights of our trip are certainly the drive on what is probably Canada’s most beautiful road, the Icefields Parkway, the train ride from Kamloops to Japser in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the national holiday on July 1st and a visit to the world’s largest rodeo festival, the Calgary Stampede.

Vancouver
We discover the wonderful city of Vancouver with its many sights on the hop-on hop-off bus. An ice cream in the old town is a must and a bit of shopping is also allowed. Or simply watch the seaplanes take off and land - whatever you fancy. In the evening, we fit our racing bikes so that we are ready for our adventure the next day.

Vancouver – Squamish (80 km / 1570 Hm)
We leave the city directly from the hotel and enjoy a short farewell tour of the famous Stanley Park. This is followed by the first small test of courage as we cross the Lions Gate suspension bridge and enjoy the view of Vancouver. Shortly afterwards we meet the Chippendales (not them - but they deserve it...) one of the most wonderful viewpoints of the harbour and the city of Vancouver. We follow the Sea-to-Sky Highway northwards. The sea to our left, we drive through wonderful forests - a bit like the Black Forest - but with the sea. The small town of Squamish already shows us something of Canada's wild beauty. We spend the night in a lodge.

Squamish – Whistler (59 km / 920 Hm)
A special day - because it is National Day in Canada. We are likely to hear lots of horns honking today as we ride in our Canada jerseys, which is of course a must. The winter ski paradise and summer downhill resort of Whistler awaits us. A bit like Zermatt or Flims in Canada. The Winter Olympics were held here in 2010. As the stage is relatively short, we will be able to enjoy the beautiful hotel and the small town of Whistler today.

Whistler – Lillooet (132 km / 640 Hm)
Today our legs are challenged for the first time. We head out into the vast Canadian countryside. Away from the traffic on lonely roads, surrounded by 2000 metre peaks, the day takes us to Lillooet in a completely different Canada. The town was created by the gold rush of 1858, when the canoe route across Harrison Lake, a route that bypassed the Fraser Canyon, met the Fraser here. At the height of the gold rush, Lillooet is said to have had a population of 20,000. In 1912, the town was connected to the railway by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Today, Lillooet is a sleepy village with few inhabitants and a legendary hotel and saloon. We will fully occupy it. It feels like we've been transported back 100 years. Welcome to the wild west.

Lillooet – Cache Creek (89 km / 940 Hm)
We cycle further and further into unspoilt Canada on beautiful roads with little traffic. Our destination, Cache Creek, is located in the southern part of British Columbia on the Thompson Plateau. The Bonaparte River flows through Cache Creek and the Fraser River flows south of the community. Numerous plant fossils from the Eocene have been found in the area of the community. Cache Creek had historical significance as a way station on the old Cariboo Road. It developed into a small village with a population of around 900.

Cache Creek – Kamloops (125 km / 940 Hm)
Past lakes and rivers to Kamloops. Kamloops was founded in 1812 as a trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company. The town lies at the confluence of the North Thompson River and the South Thompson River to form the Thompson River, not far from Kamloops Lake. As a favourable trading post, Kamloops has been a settlement area of the Secwepemc tribal group for over 2000 years. Due to its geographical location, Kamloops has a continental climate, which one would hardly expect here. This phenomenon is clearly visible even from an airplane. We enjoy a delicious dinner in this town and round off the evening before making our way to the railway station at around midnight.

Rest day / transfer by train to Jasper
Our adventure by train begins shortly after midnight. We will spend a good nine hours of our rest day on the train to Jasper. Arrival in Jasper is scheduled for 11.00 am. This leaves us plenty of time in the afternoon to explore the town and buy some souvenirs. Did you know that goods trains have priority over passenger trains in Canada? So we may well have to wait a little longer for our train. But it's worth it. And with a bit of luck, the train will stop at the most beautiful places. We enjoy the evening together in Jasper, in the middle of the national park.

Today we visit one of the most beautiful parts of Jasper National Park and drive to Malinge Lake. When the weather is fine, it's hard to beat. There is plenty of time to explore Jasper and buy a souvenir.

Jasper – Sunwapta Falls (58 km /1570Hm)
We will now spend three days travelling what is probably the most beautiful road in the world: The world-famous Icefields Parkway. Our crossing of the Rocky Mountains has now definitely begun and we feel that Rock the Rocky Mountains is probably the right title. We spend the night in log cabins near Sunwapta Falls, which we explore together on foot. Take me home country roads...

Sunwapta Falls – Saskatchewan River Crossing (99 km /920 Hm)
The Icefields Parkway leads through Banff National Park. Crossing the Sunwapta Pass with a view of the Columbia Icefield is certainly another highlight of this trip. Where the many tourists suddenly come from seems almost impossible. You simply have to take a break at the top of the pass and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Saskatchewan River Crossing – Banff (164 km /640 Hm)
A long and strenuous day lies ahead of us. Still on the Icefields Parkway, we head towards Banff. Not without seeing Peyto Lake and Bow Lake, of course. Peyto Lake is located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and is fed by glaciers (including the Peyto Glacier of the same name) and is depicted in many illustrated books about Canada due to its striking turquoise colour. This water colour is caused by fine rock particles (the rock flour or glacial milk), which is also known as rock flour or glacial flour and enters the lake with the meltwater. Passing Lake Louis, we reach Banff.

A short tour in the middle of the national park around Banff loosens up our legs. Afterwards, there is plenty of time to explore the small town of Banff with its many small shops.

Banff – Calgary (140km / 940Hm)
We set off on our final stage, which demands a lot from us once again. We leave the Rocky Mountains behind us today, which is pretty impressive when you look back. Calgary lies ahead of us. To be precise, after a rough climb, followed by a beautiful view of the city and the Olympic ski jump. We head across the city to our last hotel. It's done - we've rocked the Rocky Mountains!

Sightseeing in Calgary and participation in the Stampede
We experience a city in top form. Cowboys everywhere with Stetson heads, i.e. cowboy hats and real guns in their holsters. The whole town is in a state of emergency because it's Stampede - the biggest rodeo in the world. We will be there when the wild cowboys and cowgirls show off their skills. It's a must-see event. And if you still feel like shopping - Calgary invites you to do so too.
